STARLIGHT MESA FEBRUARY 2006 NEWSLETTER

Long-time Mesa resident Bert Meyer, MD, died February 22nd at age 94 at his home, 220 Starlight Crest Drive.  We extend our sympathy to his family, and especially his granddaughter, Amanda, who lived with him recently.  Services will be held at 2:30 PM on Friday, March 3rd at the Church of the Lighted Window, 1200 Foothill Blvd, La Canada.

Dr Meyer was a prominent heart surgeon at Children's and Good Samaritan Hospitals.  He was a legend in his field, whose patients included John Wayne, Robert Kennedy and Humphrey Bogart.  Deanne and Michael Durfee, his neighbors, owe him their gratitude, as do other neighbors whom he helped.

We continue to receive bids on resurfacing and other repairs at the pool and will make a decision shortly.  Other improvements, such as new umbrellas, will be made after the rainy season.

A reminder:  Plant cuttings done by residents should be disposed of with their weekly trash collection.  They will not be picked up by the Mesa gardeners.

The Easter Egg Hunt was enjoyed by 16 children and their parents last year.  Please contact me if you are willing to organize it for Saturday, April 8th or 15th this year.  Perhaps some of the Mesa teenagers would enjoy doing it. I have the decorations, plastic eggs to hide, etc.

The pool gates have been repaired so that they close and lock when left to swing shut.  However, we have still found them slightly open, presumably on purpose.  This is against the law and a safety concern.  Please make sure the gates are locked after use.  Thank you!

Several weeks ago tables and chairs were thrown into the pool.  We have requested added surveillance from the Sheriff's Department.  Please inform a Board member if you see any non-residents in the pool area.  Again, thank you!

Here is a partial Fire Hazard Reduction Checklist as issued by the Fire Department:
--remove needles, leaves or other material from roof
--trim vegetation to 10 ft. from chimneys
--remove litter under trees and shrubs, prune out all dead wood
--crowns of trees should not overhang the roof

Thank you to the Pollaras, who have placed a wooden bench in the shade on the east side of the "green", in memory of Fabrizio's parents.   Enjoy!
